Why Instagram Is Getting Rid of the Following Tab

Instagram has scrapped the following activity tab in its new update. The feature allowed users to see the activities of the accounts they were following. This feature made liking photos, making comments and following accounts public knowledge. This following tab has been known to expose unexpected behaviour of what is consumed on the app.

The reason for the removal is the feature is quite simple. It was intended to allow users to discover new accounts through the activities of the accounts they followed. This reason has been made obsolete by the Explore Page which presents that content in a more consumable format.

Instagram’s head of product, Vishal Shah said that the removal of the feature will likely be unnoticed as the number of users who use it are extremely small. Besides, those who know about the tab used it for toxic reasons.

“People didn’t always know that their activity is surfacing,” Shah said to BuzzFeed. “So you have a case where it’s not serving the use case you built it for, but it’s also causing people to be surprised when their activity is showing up.”

Some have taken to Twitter to mourn the end of the feature and the ability to keep tabs on their crush’s exploits on the app or their friends’ weird interests. We common folk have also lost the power to keep up with the social media behavior of famous individuals.
