The January 2020 issue of Essence magazine which also happens to be for their 50th-anniversary, featured an eight-page spread which shone the spotlight on trailblazing Nigerian and African designers who are “staking their claim on the international stage”.
The editorial tagged “Made In Africa” includes designers like Mai Atafo, Sisiano, Pepper Row, Tokyo James, Awa Miete and Orange Culture. The editorial aims to bring “the breadth of our sartorial expression to the fore” where a new crop of African designers are “transforming how the world sees the continent”.
The editorial was shot “in Nigeria’s bustling style capital during Lagos Fashion Week” which consisted of a series of panel discussions, workshops and runway shows” which “featured Black creatives across the Diaspora”. Inspired by all the melanin and Afrocentrism, Essence hit the buzzing and vibrant street of Victoria Island to showcase the collections of these forward-thinking designers.
