Dior Lady Bag Gets A Makeover In Collaboration With South African Artist

Dior has decided to shine the spotlight on the African continent by collaborating with South African Artist, Athi-Patra Ruga to create two signature handbags.

For the past couple of years, Dior picks out artists from different parts of the world to redesign the classic Dior Lady bag. The artists have creative freedom to add their personal artistic flair and merge their culture with the design.

The first design by Athi-Patra in this collaboration is a three dimensional self-portrait made with pearls, crystals, fabric and metal flowers on a black bag. The other design is a quilted scallop motif inspired by the brand’s iconic Junon gown on a blue lambskin leather bag.

The artist speaking about the collaboration said, “For me, I find that there’s something so punk about high fashion and high craftsmanship, which is one of the cornerstones of both my studio and the Dior studio.”

Other creators collaborating with Dior on this project this year are Maria Nepomuceno, Rina Banerjee, Jia Lee, Mickalene Thomas,  and Eduardo Terrazas.

The bags will be available for sale both online and in stores in January 2020.
